Frequently asked questions for Parents, Birth Partners & Gift Buyers

What is the Birth Bumps Card Game?

Birth Bumps is a conversation-starting birth preparation game for expectant parents and birth partners.

Through play and discussion, it introduces 36 practical ways to soothe, support and ease birth—helping you explore what might feel useful and build a flexible toolkit of ideas.

Who is Birth Bumps for?

Birth Bumps is created for expectant parents and birth partners. It can also be played with friends, family members or anyone who may be involved in supporting you during birth.

Birth professionals can use the cards with clients, couples and groups.

When should we start playing?

There is no set time to begin. Many parents start exploring Birth Bumps during the later months of pregnancy, often from around 28 weeks.

You can play more than once, return to particular cards or use them to continue conversations as your preparation develops.

Do we need to know anything about birth before playing?

No. Birth Bumps is designed to be approachable, whether you are just beginning your preparation or have already attended classes, read books or explored other resources.

The cards provide starting points for conversation and discovery rather than testing what you already know.

What is included in the game?

Each Birth Bumps Card Game contains:

  • 36 birth-support technique cards;
  • two blank cards for adding your own ideas;
  • instructions for playing and exploring the cards.
How many people can play?

Birth Bumps can be played by 2–6 people. It works particularly well for expectant parents and birth partners, but it can also be used with families, small groups or within antenatal classes.

Is it competitive?

The classic game includes a light competitive element, but winning is not really the point.

As you play, the cards encourage you to talk about the techniques, ask questions and discover what appeals to you. You can also use the cards more informally for conversation and exploration.

Does Birth Bumps replace antenatal classes?

No. Birth Bumps is designed to complement—not replace—antenatal education, advice from your maternity team or other forms of birth preparation.

It can help you begin conversations, reinforce learning and continue exploring ideas together at home.

Does Birth Bumps promote a particular type of birth?

No. Birth Bumps does not define what a “good” birth looks like or suggest that one approach is right for everyone.

Birth is individual and does not always follow a plan. The cards help you explore a range of possibilities and consider what might support you as birth unfolds.

Will using the cards lead to an easier birth?

Birth Bumps does not promise a particular experience or outcome.

Preparation cannot predict birth, but it can help you become familiar with different options, ask useful questions and build a toolkit of ideas to draw upon.

Are all the techniques suitable for everyone?

Individual circumstances differ, and not every technique will be appropriate or appealing to everyone.

A symbol on a card means that you should speak to your midwife or maternity team before using that technique. Always follow advice relating to your own pregnancy and care.

Can we use the cards during birth?

Birth Bumps is primarily a preparation tool, but you may choose to revisit particular cards or techniques during birth if that feels helpful and appropriate.

The cards are possibilities, not instructions you have to follow.

Can I give Birth Bumps as a gift?

Yes. Birth Bumps makes a thoughtful pregnancy, baby-shower or expectant-parent gift—particularly for parents and birth partners who would enjoy preparing together in a more relaxed and engaging way.
