For Birth Professionals

Help families turn learning into personal discovery

Birth Bumps is a flexible, conversation-led resource that helps expectant parents and birth partners explore, discuss and apply what they are learning about birth.

Through play, comparison and conversation, families discover practical ways to soothe, support and ease birth—and begin considering what those ideas might mean for them.

Birth Bumps helps birth professionals turn information into active, personal learning—giving families engaging ways to explore, apply and practise using their birth preparation as circumstances change.

Created to support and complement your work, not replace it.

Information is only the beginning

Birth professionals introduce families to important knowledge, practical tools and different possibilities for birth.

But hearing about an option is not always the same as connecting with it.

Parents may still need time and space to:

  • explore how an idea might feel in practice;
  • express what appeals to them—or does not;
  • recognise differences between their preferences;
  • involve their birth partner in the conversation;
  • consider how different tools might work together; and
  • revisit their choices as their understanding develops.

Birth Bumps creates a simple, approachable way to take that next step.

From learning to personal application

The Birth Bumps Card Game introduces 36 practical ways to soothe, support and ease birth across five categories:

Oxytocin. Support. Mind. Relaxation. Comfort.

As the cards are played, ideas are revealed, compared and discussed.

There is no single correct choice and no promise that one technique will work in every situation. The scores provide a starting point for exploration—not a verdict about what anyone should choose.

The more families play, the more they discover.

They begin to move beyond recognising an idea towards considering:

  • Would this appeal to me?
  • When might it feel helpful?
  • What support would I need?
  • What else could I try?
  • How might my preferences change?

This is where information begins to become personal preparation.

A different way to engage with birth preparation

Play opens the conversation

The familiar game format makes it easier to begin, participate and respond. Parents and partners can encounter new ideas without feeling that they need to know the answers first.

Learning becomes active

Instead of only receiving information, players compare possibilities, ask questions and contribute their own thoughts and experiences.

Discovery makes it personal

Each conversation helps families notice their preferences, differences and areas they may want to explore further.

Practice supports adaptability

Ideas can be revisited, combined and considered in different situations. The aim is not to predict birth, but to become more familiar with a range of possible tools for whatever unfolds.

Supporting the work you already do

Birth professionals give families knowledge, guidance and practical ways to prepare. But the next step—turning that learning into something personal, memorable and adaptable—often needs a different kind of engagement.

Birth Bumps helps create that step.

Through play, discussion and facilitated activities, families can explore practical tools on their own terms, consider how they might use them and practise applying their learning across different birth situations.

This does not replace antenatal education or professional support. It helps clients engage more deeply with the work you already do.

The Card Game opens discovery and conversation. Professional activities support application and practice.

Together, the Birth Bumps range helps professionals move clients from receiving information to exploring it, applying it and preparing to adapt when birth unfolds in its own way.

Birth Bumps is not an antenatal course and does not attempt to replace professional knowledge, guidance or relationships.

It gives you another way to help families engage with the learning you already provide.

You might use the cards to:

  • open or conclude a teaching session;
  • introduce comfort and support options;
  • encourage discussion between birth partners;
  • prompt small-group exploration;
  • revisit learning from an earlier session;
  • explore how preferences may change in different circumstances;
  • support one-to-one conversations;
  • create an interactive class activity; or
  • give families a way to continue learning together at home.

You can use one card, a selected category, a short activity or the complete game. The resource can adapt to your setting, your clients and the time available.

Created with experience - and respect for yours

Birth Bumps was created by Jenny Parsons, a former NHS midwife and antenatal teacher.

It grew from an understanding that birth preparation is not only about how much information families receive. It is also about whether they have opportunities to engage with that information, discuss it together and consider how it connects with them.

Birth Bumps does not define a good birth, prescribe the right choices or promise a particular outcome.

It supports families to explore practical possibilities and prepare with greater familiarity and adaptability—alongside the professionals already supporting them.
